A $12 million Federal Government assistance package has been announced in Australia as Victoria experiences the country’s worst ever bush fires.

The death toll is closing in on 100 as 25 fires continue to burn across the state.

At least 25 people died in Kinglake, north of Melbourne. Many were trapped in their cars, unable to escape.

Residents of Marysville describe watching cars literally melting as their town was wiped from the map. One said she could not get out of the area so she stood on the outskirts and watched the town burn.

More than 300,000 hectares of land has burnt out and authorities say some of the blazes could take weeks to contain. There are fears that many more bodies will be discovered when the scorched remains of towns are sifted through.

Mr Ihaka says the blazes are so hot and so fast-moving that sometimes, firefighters can only stand back and watch them. He says when there is a bad year like this there is not much people can do.

At least half of the fires are thought to have been deliberately lit and in some cases arsonists restarted blazes that had been contained. Authorities say anyone found to have started a fire will face murder charges.

You know, on the news the other day was this older lady that is making an issue about Qantas airline not giving her her dead husbands air points.

It does state very clearly in the conditions of air points for Qantas Australia that in the event of death the air points will be lost/terminated. It is clear as day and night, yet her husband dies and they have gained a heap of air points, so now she wants to use them and rather than accepting the rules he signed up for, she wants to be a greedy cow and insist she should get the points.

I get annoyed at the fact the news yet again took the complainer’s side, they will always take the side of the little person, no matter how wrong they are. Towards the end of the piece they even let the country know another budget airline does allow transfer from dead people’s accounts and maybe we should all think about flying them instead. How ridiculous is that ?

I understand she may be upset, it is also very sad she lost her husband, but she has to just suck it up, the rules are written plain and simple, so why go out to the news services and try to cause bad publicity for the airline ? Is it because she thinks they will cave in to the pressure ? Is she really so immoral she will use these tactics to get something she doesn’t deserve ?

The guy dies from a long term terminal illness, so they had plenty of time to pay the small fees and he could have gifted the air points to her before he died. But NO they didn’t even bother. I would understand more if he died from an accident and they had no opportunity.

She gets a stupid greedy cow rating from me.
